Who Is Not a Good Fit for EMDR Therapy?
At our practice, Sage Talk Therapy, we believe EMDR can be deeply healing. We also believe something just as important.
EMDR is not right for everyone, and it is not right at every stage of healing.
We offer EMDR and EMDR Intensives in Westchester, New York, but we never see EMDR as a one size fits all solution. Our approach is grounded in safety, readiness, and respect for your nervous system.
In this article, we want to share honestly who may not be a good fit for EMDR, especially EMDR Intensives, and how we approach this work thoughtfully at Sage Talk Therapy.
How We Think About EMDR Therapy
EMDR helps the brain reprocess painful or overwhelming experiences so they no longer feel as raw or disruptive in the present. Rather than analyzing memories, we work with how experiences are stored in the nervous system.
We often use EMDR to support clients dealing with:
Trauma and PTSD
Anxiety and panic
Childhood emotional wounds
Attachment and relationship trauma
Phobias and performance anxiety
EMDR Intensives allow this work to happen in a more focused way, often over extended sessions across one or more days. For some people, this format is life changing. For others, it is not the right starting point.
Our job is to help you figure out which category you fall into.
If you are in New York or Connecticut and wondering whether EMDR or an EMDR Intensive is right for you, we invite you to book a free consultation call with our team to explore your options in a supportive, no-pressure way.
Who May Not Be a Good Fit for EMDR Right Now
When Someone Is in Acute Crisis
If someone is currently dealing with active suicidal thoughts, ongoing self harm, severe emotional instability, or untreated psychosis, we typically do not recommend EMDR right away.
EMDR brings emotional material to the surface. Without enough stability, this can feel overwhelming rather than healing.
In these cases, our focus is on safety, grounding, and stabilization first. EMDR may still be an option later, once there is more internal support in place.
When Emotional Regulation Skills Are Not There Yet
EMDR does not require you to talk through every detail of what happened. But it does require some ability to stay present with emotions and body sensations.
If someone feels easily flooded, dissociates quickly, or has difficulty calming their nervous system after distress, we usually slow things down.
In our work, preparation is not a delay. It is part of the healing.
Before we ever recommend an EMDR Intensive, we want to know that your system has enough tools to move through the work safely.
When Someone Is Looking for Advice or Problem Solving
EMDR is not a directive therapy. We are not giving advice, telling you what to do, or analyzing situations in a logical way.
If you are looking primarily for:
Practical strategies
Direct feedback
Behavioral tools
Another approach may be a better fit, either on its own or before EMDR.
EMDR works at the level of memory, emotion, and the nervous system, not problem solving.
When There Is Pressure or Lack of Choice
We pay close attention to motivation. EMDR tends to work best when someone feels curious and ready, even if they are nervous.
If someone is pursuing EMDR because a partner, family member, or previous therapist pushed them into it, we slow down.
Healing should never feel forced. Consent and pacing matter deeply in trauma work.
When Dissociation Is Severe and Unsupported
Some dissociation is common in trauma survivors. More complex dissociation requires specialized care and very careful pacing.
EMDR can still be used, but only when there is strong containment, trust, and stabilization in place.
This is one reason we do not offer EMDR Intensives without screening and preparation.
Our Perspective on EMDR Intensives
EMDR Intensives can be powerful. They can also be too much if offered without care.
We tend to recommend EMDR Intensives when someone:
Feels emotionally stable enough for deeper work
Has some grounding and regulation skills
Wants focused trauma processing
Has limited availability for weekly sessions
We may recommend a different path if someone is early in therapy, overwhelmed by current life stressors, or still learning how to feel safe in their body.
Faster is not always better. Sustainable healing is our priority.
